Free Backlink Checker APIs: Access, Coverage, and Limits

Compare backlink API trials, restricted free tests, and paid access. Check target scope, link records, pagination, and the cost of a finished report.

An amber glass magnifying lens examines connections between a central ivory web page and smaller source pages.

Check what the free offer lets your application retrieve

A free backlink checker API must let your code request backlink data under documented free-access rules. A free browser checker, a test endpoint limited to the supplier's own domain, and a live API with a small trial balance provide different starting points.

If you need to retrieve links for your own target domain, first verify that the free offer includes that target, the required operation, and enough rows to evaluate it. A signup button alone establishes none of those conditions.

Choose the result level before comparing providers:

Your taskRequired output
Summarize a site's link profileCounts and documented summary metrics
Find sites that link to a targetReferring domains
Inspect a particular inbound linkSource URL, destination URL, anchor, and available attributes
Track changesDefined historical or new/lost records with their observation dates

For a supported paid access path, inspect the backlink operations available through Glasser's Ahrefs catalog. Confirm whether the selected report returns individual links or groups by domain before building a parser.

The access and price information below was checked against official documentation on October 13, 2026. We have not run a shared coverage or accuracy benchmark.

Compare trial access with production requirements

DataForSEO: a finite balance for live API testing

DataForSEO documents a $1 signup balance for API testing. It can fund a limited number of live requests without a time limit. Its sandbox serves integration testing with dummy data; it cannot establish coverage of your chosen live target.

The provider's Backlinks endpoint supports target-based backlink records and controls such as limits and filters. Verify the fields and target scope in the current endpoint contract. Use a small live request if your question is whether the index contains links for a particular site.

Ahrefs: free test targets are restricted

Ahrefs' free test-query documentation says users on a paid plan can test with an API key. Site Explorer test requests avoid unit consumption when the target is ahrefs.com, yep.com, firehose.com, or a URL under those domains. Free tests are capped at 100 results.

That is useful for validating request shape and parsing. It does not provide unrestricted free backlink lookups for your client or competitor. The current Ahrefs API access page lists eligible paid plans and says Ahrefs Free and Starter do not include API access.

Ahrefs Free: a browser workflow for verified sites

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, now Ahrefs Free, provides browser access to reports for verified websites. The page describes up to 1,000 backlinks visible at once. Check API eligibility separately; the browser allowance does not replace the API plan requirements above.

Glasser's Ahrefs and DataForSEO catalogs include backlink operations. Its documented workflow provides free endpoint Search and Inspect, then charges data retrieval according to the inspected price. Native supplier free tests and trial balances have separate rules.

Evaluate a small, fixed target set

Start with three targets you understand: a full domain, a specific page, and a page with a known inbound link. This is an evaluation design, not a measured sample from our research.

For every candidate operation:

  1. Fix the target scope. Record whether it covers a page, path prefix, domain, or subdomains. Use the same scope when comparing providers.
  2. Choose the report level. A referring-domain list cannot stand in for a complete source-page list.
  3. Request a bounded first page. Save the exact filters, sort order, row limit, and aggregation behavior.
  4. Keep the raw result. Preserve available source and destination URLs, anchors, link attributes, provider metrics, and observation dates.
  5. Inspect known links. Compare returned evidence with the current source page where accessible. Record redirects, changed anchors, and inaccessible pages.
  6. Check continuation. Use the documented pagination method and record whether you stopped at a limit. Do not label the first page as the complete link profile.

If you use Glasser, inspect the chosen DataForSEO operation and its example input before executing the pilot. Use the response from that exact operation to determine your parser and continuation method.

Keep evaluation observations in a separate table. “Known link returned” and “current source page still contains the link” are different checks. Neither one establishes that the supplier has indexed every link pointing to the target.

One website can contain many pages linking to the same target. A domain-level aggregate can therefore be much smaller than a link-level list while describing the same index. Store counts with their report definition and filters.

Ahrefs' Backlinks reference documents aggregation modes including similar links, one per domain, and all links. Its history options also change what the report contains. Those settings matter when comparing totals.

Treat index dates as observations

A supplier's first-seen or last-seen field describes its observation under the field's documented meaning. Use that definition when reporting changes. A later crawl can discover an older link; a missing record can reflect the report scope, filtering, or index coverage.

If you need to confirm a specific link's current state, inspect the source page as a separate step. Record an inaccessible page as unverified. Do not infer removal solely from a timeout or blocked fetch.

Keep supplier scores attached to their definitions

Authority and rank scores are provider-defined measures. Save the provider name and metric alongside the number. Two similarly named scores from different suppliers may measure different things and need their own interpretation.

For reporting, a small set of well-defined fields is more useful than a mixed table of link counts and scores with no provenance. Keep unknown attributes unknown instead of filling them with assumptions.

Budget for tasks, rows, and the report you will finish

DataForSEO's current Backlinks price page lists a live-mode fee of $0.024 per task plus $0.000036 per returned row. Under that documented rate, a task returning 100 rows costs $0.0276; 1,000 rows costs $0.06. These are calculated direct-provider examples, not observed charges from a test.

The provider's pricing update removed the former $100 monthly commitment for Backlinks. Its minimum-payment guidance still describes a separate $50 funding minimum. Separate account funding from the cost of an individual lookup.

Ahrefs uses API units governed by its plan and requested report. Check the current endpoint and unit rules instead of translating a browser row allowance into free API capacity.

For Glasser, use the operation's inspected price and the resulting Run's charge. Do not transfer DataForSEO's direct rate or Ahrefs' native unit allowance into a Glasser cost calculation.

Your production budget should count summary requests, link pages, historical queries, and any separate verification fetches. Calculate cost per finished report using the report scope you agreed to deliver. If you stop after the first 100 rows, describe that bounded sample explicitly.

Is there an unlimited free API for arbitrary domains?

The documented options evaluated here have trial, target, account, or usage conditions. Confirm a provider's current entitlement for your target and operation before treating it as an ongoing free integration.

Can I scrape a free checker instead of using its API?

A web form has its own access terms and interface behavior. For a maintainable integration, use a documented API or an authorized export workflow and keep its limitations visible.

This guide does not rank coverage. Compare the same target scope, filters, dates, and known-link sample before drawing a conclusion for your workload.
